The population was 7,459 at the 2010 census.The cities's motto, based on the fact that outsiders tend to mispronounce the name MEK-see-?, is "A great place to live, no matter how you pronounce it."Named after General José Antonio Mexía, a Mexican hero for the Republic of Texas Army during the Texas Revolution, the town was founded near his estate. Nearby attractions include Fort Parker Historical recreation, the Confederate Reunion grounds, and Mexia State Supported Living Center (formerly Mexia State School), which began as a prisoner of war camp for members of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Korps during World War II.Mexia is also home to the Mexia Public Schools Museum, one of a few museums dedicated to the historical and social significance of a Texas public school system.Mexia hosts a large Juneteenth celebration every year.

• Fort Parker State Park : Fort Parker State Park is a Texas state park near Mexia and to Limestone County seat Groesbeck, Texas. The city of Mexia and three local landowners donated the land creating the park in 1935. From 1935 to 1942, Civilian Conservation Corps Company 3807 built roads, recreational facilities, the concession building and a 423-foot dam of limestone, concrete, and soil across the Navasota River, creating Lake Fort Parker. The park was dedicated by former Texas Governor Pat Neff and opened to the public in May 1941. Fort Parker State Park has three hike-and-bike trails: Springfield trail, Navasota River Trail, and Baines Creek Trail. The Bur Oak Trail is a nature trail with an interpretive guide pamphlet available. Trees in the park include bur oak, water oak, blackjack oak, pecan, and eastern red cedar. Other plants that can be found are American beautyberry and sumac. Inside the park is the Old Springfield Cemetery, all that remains of the once-thriving community of Springfield, Texas. Springfield was once the county seat of Limestone County and thrived during the 1840s and 1850s, but as men left for the Civil War, the town's businesses began to close.
  
• Confederate Reunion Grounds State Historic Site : Confederate Reunion Grounds is a Texas historic site located near Mexia, Limestone County, Texas at the confluence of the Navasota River and Jack's Creek. From 1889–1946, Confederate Civil War veterans and families reunited at the site during late-July or early-August, camping under the giant bur oaks, enjoying speeches, concerts, dances, fellowship and food, and raising funds for families of their fallen comrades. Today, Confederate Reunion Grounds is operated by the Texas Historical Commission and is open to the public. Historic architectural attractions include the 1893 dance pavilion, entrance marker and iron archway, 1920s pump house, ruins of Miss Mamie Kennedy's “Delight House, ” Colonel Humphrey's Arch and Spring, rock and concrete barbecue pits, and rock chimneys, ponds, fountains, cisterns and wells throughout the site. A Civil War-era cannon, “Old Val Verde, ” is exhibited beneath the flagpoles at the center of the site near the intersection of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson Avenues. The cannon's history includes action for both Union and Confederate forces.
